Governors Highway Safety Association: Pedestrian Fatalities at a 30-Year High
According to a report issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association, 6,227 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in 2018, the highest number in almost three decades. The report indicates that most of these fatalities occurred in large metropolitan areas, and experts point to drivers distracted by their smartphones and larger vehicles on the road as the main reasons behind the increase.
Locally, at least two nonprofit groups have called for Nashville to take steps to become more pedestrian friendly. Late last fall, Walk Bike Nashville and Music City Riders came together to walk along one of the most dangerous streets in the city in an effort to draw attention to the problem.
In a report published by WKRN.com, Nora Kern, Executive Director of Walk Bike Nashville was quoted as saying “This is my city, I’m from Nashville and I hate that you know that the only way to get around and to have access to our city, is to have a car. You shouldn’t have to have a car to feel safe, and to get to work and to get to school.”
What to Do if You Are Injured in a Nashville Pedestrian Accident
In the unfortunate event that you are injured in a pedestrian accident, there are certain steps that you should take to ensure that you can recover compensation for your losses. These include:
- If you are able to stay at the scene of the accident, make sure to document as much information as possible. Make sure to get the driver’s name and insurance information and take pictures of the aftermath of the accident. Of course, if there is any question that you need medical attention, go directly to the hospital and do not refuse emergency medical treatment. It is always possible to obtain the necessary information later.
- Undergo a Thorough Medical Evaluation, even if you do not think that your injuries are particularly serious. It’s vital that any injuries you suffered in your accident are accurately diagnosed and that you start treatment as soon as possible. Also, because you will almost certainly be making an insurance claim at some point in the future, it’s essential that you have an official medical record detailing your injuries and connecting them to the accident in which you were involved.
- Contact an attorney as soon as you can. It’s important to start investigating your case as soon as possible after your accident, as waiting can risk the loss or destruction of evidence important to your case. In addition, while you are unrepresented, there is a chance that you could say something to the insurance company that could justify the reduction of your settlement or even the denial of your claim completely.
